Well, I've read the novels at least five times each, and I'm getting reams of information that I didn't already know from this history.

In fact, I wish academic history books were this well written; it has always irritated the crap out of me how BORING academics make history when it's so exciting, as Martin clearly shows.

Still, he needs to finish the damned books (see my other post, won't repeat).(less)

That being said, I would not recommend it, unless you’re into reading history books and academic texts. The book is not plot-driven, although it does go into some level of detail about certain important historical figures, events, wars, etc. Besides, you’re going to miss a lot of the tie-ins (mostly ancestral, but also geographic, religious, mythological, etc.) with the plot of the main series, which is what makes this book interesting in the first place.(less)
