A mom with no husband might have found herself unable to house and feed her kids. Maybe that would have been a better choice. I do not know how the book turns out so I know little of the circumstances, but I do know decades back a woman with no husband was called many names I will not repeat here. she would need to lie and say he was dead. I know this is a year later, but knowing history and culture helps. I think it was overkill for her to go off that far though.(less)
