Can anyone explain to me what this book is about? I don't mean that to sound insulting. I just finished it, and I find Panshin to be a lovely author with a style that really appealed to me, but there doesn't seem to be a real point to this novel. It's just a bunch of stuff that happens, then stops happening, with no real central idea or moral or, well, anything.

If it were a plainly didactic book with an obvious moral, I think it would be a lesser book, and I'd enjoy it less. The story was written in the late 1960s, and it's served up as an Experience, like the musical concert near the end. Different people can interpret it differently and get different things out of it.(less)
