Mae West is referred to in chapter 1. The exact sentence is “On a Thursday afternoon in late November, May, who spelt her name Mae even before Miss West wiped out any memory of Princess May...” (Princess) May was the informal name of the Mary who married Prince George, who became King George V. The book was published in 1940, and I can’t find any connection between Mae West and Queen Mary/the Queen Mother??
