Neil told the director of the movie about his idea before he had actually written the book and allowed him to run with the concept with the two checking in with each other has they wrote their respective adaptations. This is why the general idea and conflict are the same but the execution is done differently. They are both very good but I wouldn't say one is truly better than the other.(less)

The child had been dead so long, had died so young, and been in such a deprived condition that they couldn't remember if they were a boy or a girl.

The reference to wearing dresses and having long hair might refer to old customs relating to very young children. The dress was perhaps a sort of smock.(less)
