This book was written first, but the author decided that the world was worth revisiting and wrote the rest of the series, which give the back story of many of the characters. As it happens I read this one first but I do not think I enjoyed the series any less for reading the first written but last set book first.
That said, I do prefer the other books in the series, especially the first two in story time, Dealing with Dragons and Searching for Dragons. When reading the series I generally read just those two.(less)
