Would this be an appropriate book for a 10 year old? Excellent reader but I'm not sure if the content is age-appropriate or that she would understand the historical period.

I think I was about 9 when I read the series, which I absolutely loved. And if you're concerned about the references mentioned by Meira (@readingbooksinsrael), I would argue that 1) there aren't that many from what I remember (key word: remember, so evidently I wasn't affected by them), 2) I think I thought that being "fully developed" at the time was a reference to her intellectual capacities, so these things might go over your child's head, and 3) if your child is an excellent reader, then they will probably have read enough to understand the ways of the world explored in the series. Personally, it's 10 years later and I remember those books really fondly; they didn't scar me one bit and rather opened my mind to exploring different genres.(less)
