It seems to be a common misconception that she was married to the president Salvador Allende, because she has the same name, but she is the daughter of Tomas Allende who was a first cousin of Salvador Allende. Her father worked in the Chilean embassy in Peru, where she was born. She had fascinating life, which is worth reading about on its own.
She lived in many South American countries in the early part of her life, and the story in the book could be set in a country which is a mixture of all or any of them.(less)
