Becki I taught 7th & 8th graders. I would say this book is appropriate.

what happened to Gerta's father?

Becki The assumption is that he died in one of the camps or transports.

What is the mature content in this?

Does the Author ever discuss finding out exactly what happened to her parents and brother? Where they died? How they died? Maybe not knowing is better?

As the author is Jewish, I wondered why she talked about Christmas several years? Jews do not celebrate Christmas, but have their own holy days.
