It seems that the author is either:

1.) Oblivious to the very poor quality of their own writing, but keen to continue writing for their own enjoyment.

2.) Indifferent or to the very poor quality of their own writing, and keen to write as many short books, each rather cheap, as possible.

I suspect it's the latter...

The story-line itself is fairly engaging - at least at first. The books are written in such a way that they tend to end on cliff-hangers, which leave the reader wanting to know what happens after. The stories seem to be churned out quite quickly, but are obviously unedited.

It's difficult to describe just how poorly written these books are. There are some rather entertaining reviews available online, and I suggest you have a peek before spending any money on this series.(less)

In a way other than "those people are sinful and you should run away from them or shoot them on sight"?

Also, given that the only gay characters are "evil", I think it's debatable whether the book is presenting homosexuality positively/neutrally or (as you would presumably prefer) implying that it is the province of evil people.

That said, while I don't agree with your views on homosexuality, I think it's reasonable to criticize this book for being potentially unsuitable for younger audiences (just not for this specific reason). It's an odd mix of simplistic writing and characterization that would suggest a young audience, and sporadic (and usually poorly handled) "mature" content, like someone spliced a children's fantasy novel together with a Game of Thrones-esque "grimdark" fantasy novel.(less)
