I couldn't make myself finish this book, the description of the filth turned me off. Great description, great writing. I just didn't want to hear any more about it. But, I am left with one question. Does the book every say what happened to Kim's dad in his childhood to make him the hoarder he is (other than probably someone from his childhood had trouble with alcohol)?

I was a little confused about the episode where the father balls his fist and punches his 8 or 9 year old daughter in the face after freaking out about not being able to find his radio. It's a jaw-dropping mental image but the incident is under-explained and there's no reference to it later, or the fallout from it. Did anyone else feel like it was glossed over?

I found the entire book very frustrating in that she was a child and took the role of parenting these addictive, irresponsible people.
Enough already.....the child was damaged enough to attempt suicide, and that seemed to be glossed over by those so-called parents.(less)
