The first book introduces you to a lot of peripheral characters & helps to builder a richer experience. But I think the author does a good job of briefly explaining the relevant sections of the first book so it isn’t necessary. The second book does have a lot of spoilers about the first book though so it would be difficult to read book number 2 then book number 1(less)
