Can these be read as standalones or do I have to read the other books too?

This answer contains spoilers… (view spoiler)[It's better if you read them in order if your going to read the whole series, my advice though is if you're going to do that to just read the first three because it was originally written as a trilogy, meaning the events of the series were supposed to end with castle in the mist, the books that come after that are mostly disappointing ☹️

But if you just want to read castle in the mist as a standalone chapter one gives you a basic idea of backstory, but here's a short summary of the first two books if you'd like. Contains spoilers.

Emily windsnap finds out She's a semi-mer when she takes a swimming lessons and her legs are fully emersed in water for the first time and they turn into a tail, her father's a merman who fell in love with her human mother, but Neptune (king of the mer people) forbid such a union and Emily's dad was sent to prison and her mother's memory was wiped. Later we find out that's thanks to a Mr Beeston, the light house keeper (and also secretly a semi-mer) who's been given Emily's mom drugged donuts for years! Long story short with the help of new full time mermaid friend, Shona, Emily rescues her dad from a undersea jail and reunites her parents, but must face Neptune's rath, she convinced him to let them all (Emily&her parents, Shona and her family, and an cooky neighbor named mystic Milly) to live peacefully on an island in the Bermuda triangle where humans and mermaids live together. Enter book 2 where Emily is coping with having both her parents together, and trying to fit in with the other mermaids. Then when Emily finds a secret treasure that accidentally unleashes a sea monster( the kraken) everyone on and around the island is put in terrible danger.
Not a lot other then that happens, it's pretty straightforward, except Emily and her former enemy from her home town are forced to work together and save the day thus making them friends (until the other girls memory is wiped of course) but that's not really relevant till book 4,Soo....
