It is a wonderful work and seems simple but really it is quite difficult. Some of the things that De Caussade says are at odds. He does rail against quietism which had it's day in the sun but in the Harper One edition on p10, he says, "For obedience to God's undefined will depends entirely on our passive surrender to it. We put nothing of ourselves into it apart from a general willingness that is prepared to do anything and nothing, like a tool that, though it has no power in itself, when in the hands of the craftsmen, can be used by him for any purpose within the range of its capacity and design." It seems to be quietism but he does say that we need to do our normal everyday things. There is such great advice in here and I love his enthusiasm which spills out onto the pages. (less)
