As the protagonist is enslaved, i suppous his master had other slaves, and those probably black, so, assuming there are blacks in the book, are they portrayed as inferior or something like that?

SPOILER ALERT: In the novel, Colonel Bishop uses armed black retainers to guard and control his white slaves...scarcely an inferior position, I’d say. In the raid on Cartagena, the French governor of Hispaniola raises a “Negro Corps” of fighting troops to spearhead the invasion along with French troops.

Did blacks play a featured role? No...the story is a mid-20th Century historical novel about an Irish physician unjustly-enslaved, not 21st Century “Woke” Cancel Culture sensitivities. (less)

If kids were given books like this to read at an earlier age then more children would turn into readers. Scaramouche is also a very good book.(less)
