The subject matter however can feel very cringe-worthy at times. Not that it's graphic, rather the focal couple is VERY awkward. We all have that one friend that consistently exudes an uncomfortable awkwardness. Michael and Pauline's story reads a lot like that.

I might not find myself reaching to re-read the book any time soon, but Anne Tyler has a distinct style that piques my interest and I will be sure to pick up some of her works in the future.

Overall The Amateur Marriage is what I would consider to be a quick light read (once you get past the first 50 or so pages) it doesn't spend too much time bogging the reader down with unnecessary detail or politics as some books like to do.
