To give just one example, the Scottish character, Robbie, has sworn a vow not to fight the English. Without having read the previous book(s), you will have no clue as to why he made that oath in the first place, or why it means so much to him.(less)

Is this book appropriate for a ten year old girl to read? Are there any romance scenes in it?

Alisonpaddock No, I don't think this would be appropriate. Romance is not an important part of the story. Where the heck did that subtitle come from? It's nowhere to be found on the eBook edition that I'm reading. The titles is just listed as 1356: a novel, period.

Sharon I think it was mentioned in chapter 1. The year 1356 is ten years after the 3rd book ended.

This was the first Cornwell book I have read. Before giving up, is there a better book folks might suggest? I thought this was rather superficial and full of cliches. From the comments, it seems that he's written much better books.
