The basis of the story is the big lie about the pagan figure found in a Christian tomb. Then, in individual people's histories, various versions of the past can be found (eg the experiences of Gerald's family as they were growing up) and it's hard to know which is the right version - or whether there is a "right" one, rather than just a difference in attitude. There is another big cover-up revealed at the end when we learn how Kay's arm was actually injured by her mother.(less)
