why did you like, or not like, the book?

Luciano Mezzetta Because it is not ABOUT baseball. It is about fate and who or what determines it. It is about despair over the human condition.

In reading the first British edition, published by Rupert Hart-Davis Ltd (it should be noted that, at this time, it isn't listed as an edition here and Goodreads removed the ability to easily add editions), I noticed something somewhat odd and unremarked upon: At the bottom of some pages, there is a notation of "T.U.B.A.I.—" followed by a letter. Almost like a footnote. Any ideas of the significance?

How in the H E double hockey sticks could J. H. Waugh character create a baseball world so complete it breathes without an inherant love of the game? He, H. J. states his cool demeanor for the game but he marvels at its availability to manipulate into a virtual working order of supreme detail noless. Huh!?

I read this book when it first came out. Just recently, I was looking at "Agamemnon" (Aeschylus), on the first pages of which is the line "the torch has thrown us triple sixes -- we have won!" (Robert Fagles translation.) The connection to the Unusual Occurences Chart was striking!?! The critical comments available on the ancient Greek play assert that "triple sixes" refers to actual ancient Greek dice games.
