Mandy 5 quarters....It was a reference to the orange Tomas brought to the children when he met them at the river - it had to be divided between the four chi…more5 quarters....It was a reference to the orange Tomas brought to the children when he met them at the river - it had to be divided between the four children (Cassis, Reine Claude, Paul and Framboise) but Framboise needed a piece to keep for the express purpose of tormenting her mother. She divided it furtively in an attempt to hide the fifth piece - hence 5 quarters.(less)

I just finished the book and know that I am missing something. Why the mother with Thomas? What did she have to do with all those people being shot?
A. Hoffman Mirabelle needed Tomas because he could supply her with the drug she needed to get rid of her migraines. She provided him with sex in exchange.
