I'm still pondering the significance of Jaja's scabs when his mother and sister visit him in prison--at the very end. Anyone have any insight? Could he be taking on some of his father's violence and the skin condition links the two? Could he have aids? Other ideas?

Liz In my mind, more to the point, what did Father Amadi add to the story?

I loved this book. It's amazingly well put together for a first novel. Having read later work by Adichie, she's continuing to grow and change stylistically, which is also interesting. My question: Did anyone see the wife's big reveal coming near the end--and the cover-up? I was surprised but it also made sense.

David Definitely didn't expect that ending from Mama, but it made sense given how far up the wall she must have felt. As for Jaja, it seemed completely in character for him to take responsibility for his mother's actions. In my opinion, it was the only natural conclusion for his story arc.(less)
