But it was in 1564 when a larger Spanish force with conquistadors led by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi that initiated in the subduing the archipelago. By 1570s the Philippines was under the Spanish empire. This is also how Nick Joaquin acknowledged the start of the Filipino culture.(less)
