Do you have to read the first book to enjoy/understand the second? I was wondering because this is on my summer reading list for school and I don't want to be confused. haha.

I just think that you'll miss out on the depth of some aspects. Both books are good, but Bean Trees is better. I recommend reading it first, in order to make Pigs in Heaven more worthwhile.
Also, they're both pretty quick reads. Kingsolver is a great author.(less)

Vivian Hilder I think that Turtle responded to April because that turns out to be her birth month, not her name.

Oh no, I really enjoyed reading Pigs in Heaven and was looking forward to reading The Bean Trees, but I also didn't realize that Pigs in Heaven was the sequel. This was a well-written and very funny book in lots of ways and I found myself smiling over and over again. The narrative is great. Will I learn much more by reading The Bean Trees now?
