If you recall, the loan Padgett had was overdue and he already had a meeting with the banker on Monday. That wasn't going to be enough time for him to get the money from his wife's account, since he just mailed the letter on Thursday. He planned to use that money to build his business, and then is quotes as thinking, "Now all he needed was another big whack of cash so he could pay off his bank loan on Monday." He had proposed to Violet earlier at the Blue Moon pooling their funds. At the time, she said no, but she must have changed her mind. Maybe him giving her the dog helped with that.(less)
