I'm going to read these books. Sooner rather than later. Do I need to read or know anything as a precursor? Did anyone read this along with a supplement helping explain themes or references that might be lost on westerners?

I loved it, this translation is really good (although I haven't tried another one) and the novel itself is amazing. I think it might have helped a bit to read a bunch of classical Chinese literature, since there are many references to mythical and traditional characters sprinkled throughout the book — but although these went over my head I still enjoyed the characters and the story.
