The novel is an examination of life for a gay, young man (at the start of the novel - less obviously young by the end - but not conventionally old) during the 1980s, so it was a time of great change, both for gay men and for Britain as a whole - it was the era of Margaret Thatcher - but it ended, for gay men, with considerable change in societal attitudes and AIDS - so it as toss up as to whether it can be seen as happy or sad. A bit like life really. Literary novels like this very rarely have easy stories to tell.(less)

I wouldn't say it's very detailed for the most part, but in some instances, it can be pretty graphic, especially in the language.(less)
