Also, it'…moreI personally think it's Circleville. It's bounded by the Scioto, is met by a stream, and it also was part of the Ohio and Erie Canal system. Also, it's north of Chillicothe. In the second book of the trilogy, Portius goes "down yonder to Chillicothe" to celebrate Ohio becoming a state.

I think there may have also been a mention of Americus being named as the county seat, after a rivalry with (I might be misremembering the name) I think Townville.

I wish more of Richter's research was accessible to the public. I know you asked this question a year ago, but these books are my favorites from childhood and I thought I would go ahead and answer it. What town do you think it was?

Also, it was around 1830 or so when Sayward and Portius built their new house on the main drag. I think at one time, Circleville's main street had large homes until the business district slowly took over that area of town.(less)
