I heard from various people that the Iron Butterfly has themes of torture, experimentation on people and general gore. Is this true and if so, what age rating would you say this book is? (Because my 12 year old daughter wants to read this book).

I read a bit of the beginning of the book and so far, I'm kind of frustrated. I don't really know anything, so I thought that I had somehow started somewhere in the middle of the book instead of the beginning. I have no idea what a Denai is even though it was already mentioned. I really don't expect it to like it as much as some say they did, but I just don't know if the book is really worth spending time on. Is it?
