I see that this is the third book in a trilogy. Should I read the first two before this one?

Without them, yes, I suppose it "stands alone", like any Banville book. But alone it is probably more like poetry, whereas in the context of the other two books, it compellingly reads like story. (So, with respect, Kathryn, I suggest you also consider reading #1 and #2.)(less)
