Not far from London, because the amateur detective travels there from London and arrives in time for lunch. Apart from that it's not clear. The only place names (that I can remember) are The Red House, Woodham and Stanton. There is a place called Stanton in the Cotswolds, which would possibly fit with the detective's train journey.(less)
