I think in their own minds they could justify what they were doing. An attempt to "level" the playing field, perhaps?

In hindsight, was it the right thing to do? I guess that depends on your viewpoint. Would the Cold War have happened without the actions of these men?

Now that the USSR is no longer, perhaps these little countries having the bomb is not a good thing, but that's using the benefit of 70 yrs of hindsight.

I don't necessarily agree with these guys, but one can understand their reasoning, I suppose.(less)
