He liked to think that he could one day be happy with his life with her, he simply just wanted to feel normal. He knew that, that was what he was supposed to be feeling. Once they got married, and he did what he felt obligated to do, I feel like the glitz and glamour that he believed he could feel for her was gone. She wasn't ever what he really wanted, he just knew that SHE loved him and that it would be easy for him to marry her. It was simply just obligatory. Towards the end, and through countless year of their marriage, Tom resented her for many reasons. One, that is an obvious inference, is that he was ever forced by society to marry her. In a way, I feel bad for Marion for ever truly believing that he loved her, but also, I feel like it was SO obvious that her feelings towards him weren't mutual. I guess she was just so infatuated with him that she didn't really see it.(less)

Tom's story is told through the eyes of his two lovers, which of course only gives us a biased impression of who he is. The story casts Marion and Patrick as both strong and possessive personalities, whereas Tom seems to have things just "happen" to him without much intervention on his part. Marion's POV shows us a Tom who is insecure, afraid, and fragile, and she sets herself as his saviour in a way. Patrick's POV gives the opposite impression: Tom is bashful around him but straightforward and confident. He make the first move on Patrick, against all odds, but with Marion, she takes the initiative in everything. My interpretation is that the author wanted to focus on these differences between the two lovers and how they perceive Tom. While Tom himself is of course a central character despite not having a voice, his lovers' impressions of him are more important because they fuel their obsessions towards him.(less)

If you mean the personality of Tom, it's certainly not Harry. But that's the point of acting, he's playing a really serious character, I found exciting that we'll get to see how he brings this character to life, with his own touch.

That's what I think, xo💘(less)
