Sax Rohmer set his stories in the early 1900s. The Manchu dynasty would have been experiencing its last days by then. Rohmer got the idea for his villain when he was a reporter investigating the underground Chinese mafia. Even though some today would call his description of the character he created as racist, Rohomer's intention wasn't to mock Chinese and/or Asian people. Dr. Fu-Manchu clearly has deformities that are very unique. His physical features differ from those of 99.9% of those of Chinese decent. (less)
