Which is the most popular book?

Shaun “Justine,” the first book in the series, is probably the most popular. But the best writing comes in “Balthazar” and my favorite, “Clea.”

Is there a special order in which I should read the books or can I start with whatever book I find first?

Has there been speculation about the unnamed Greek island? I know about Durrell's love of islands, and this one is probably a fictional composition of several, but I wanted to see if there is something more specific proposed - or even known (from his notebooks?)
