The heroine is always smart (but naive in love), stubborn, and unconventional for her times, the hero is dark, brooding, and heroic. The romance is usually not exactly slow burn though.
Actually, it's kind of hard to think of a book where the heroine is truly "smart", though they are all "stubborn". And all heroes in historical romance are authoritative LOL. (less)
