Just read Once and Always and want to give this a try. Is it better than the first book?

I'm confused about the ages. In the first chapter Jordan is 18, while Alex is 13. By chapter two, Jordan is 27, while in chapter three, when they first meet, she is only 17. The characters went from a five year difference in the first chapter to a ten year difference in the next two chapters. Did I misread something?
