Does the series actually reckon with the fact that its hero is on the side of the fascists? I can't help but feel a little weirded out by the possibility that this could be some kind of apologia.

It doesn't come across as an apologia at all, and I was sad when I realised that the series is now listed as the Tejada series, as this story is actually told from several narrative points of view.

I can't answer about the series as a whole but the first book doesn't read at all as an aplogia.(less)
