I don't think I'd recommend this for young kids to read. I've read four of Steinbeck's novels and I wouldn't recommend any of them for kids. When he gets to high school, I'd definitely recommend reading Steinbeck. You could recommend maybe Old Man and The Sea by Hemingway. Hemingway's writing is very simplistic and very easy for someone to read without looking up any words. Also, some of Jack London's novels would be good like The Call of the Wild or White Fang. Try to stay away from London's racist novels such as Jerry of the Islands and Michael, Brother of Jerry.(less)
