I've been thinking...why did his dad and his friends act so odd when young John claimed to have seen an angel in the garden and why did his dad later run out half dressed like a crazy man, looking I suppose, for the angel...those two scenes seem strange?...out of character?

I think the initial rejection by all of the friends is a sign of the cynicism of the age - probably a reason the vampires are losing control. The father being scared at one point anyway is a reminder that the cynicism doesn't change that it is a world with many unseen and frightening things.(less)
