The best free place to go for background is probably the official site, including an english version, at www.asterix.com

I myself embarked in a big project of writing in-depth reviews of the collection. I have reviewed less then 10 volumes so far. You can easily find my reviews with links here:

They're written in Portuguese, based on the Brazilian editions. If you can translate the text in some way, I guess you'll like them.
