How important is this novel for the greater continuity? Will I miss some connections in later novels if I skip it? Asking because I read the first chapter, but it doesn't feel like a Culture novel at all, just gross and unengaging. I prefer the novels set in the actual Culture.

But other than a knowing wink, I don't see what value those references provide in understanding any other Culture book.(less)

There is some slight advantage in reading them in order of publication as The Culture universe then opens up before you but it's not really necessary. Inversions was the third book in the series I read, after reading the first two in publication order (Consider Phlebas and The Player of Games).(less)
