If you want an abridged translation, then the best is still C.Rajagoplachari's 'Mahabharata.'

The language is excellent, by British standards, but dated, because it was written over 70 years ago, but it is timeless.

Rajaji, as he was known, was a politician, fighting for Indian independence against the British, like Gandhi, and was frequently sent to gaol.

As a political prisoner, he used the chance to meet other (non-political) convicts, and began to tell them the stories from the Mahabharata. Later on, as a citizen of an Independent India, he collected the stories and published them. They were received with great popular and critical acclaim.

If you get hold of a copy, I do hope you will enjoy it.(less)
