Nations NEED commerce, to interact with the world and the world with them, and that grows them, brings wealth. You can't do that without sea power, because you will be at the mercy of anyone who has more power than you. Sea power means ships of war to make the sea safe, means ports around the world to rest and repair, and colonies to support the ports, and grow markets and provide products and raw materials, it means EMPIRE. It also shows how sucky Europe has always been, full of jealousy, ambition, and killing. After this book, I know there are NO HEROES in Europe. England is NO HERO. The first part is theory, and I read it because I am writing a pre WW1 steampunk book where England is the enemy, not the Hero, and I was right. The latter part is exhaustive detailed battles and campaigns. France helped us in the revolution, but then they were no hero either. What we are taught in school is lies and propaganda. This book has truth in it. It can be hard to read because the language has changed. You read someone's message and you wonder what they even said though you know every word. Before TV people spoke differently, sooo differently. In one sentence, "Without Sea Power, your country has NO POWER.(less)
