If it's too much for them, they'll put the book aside. I read books like this far before they were "appropriate," and read Poe at 12, and what that did was just turn me into a lifelong reader and writer.

(Side note: telling a kid they can't read a book often makes them more eager to read it! I got in arguments with my dad about this many times and always won and read the book.)(less)

In other words, book two is not going to stand well without book one, but book one could totally be a standalone. (I actually am not a huge fan of series, even though I seem to be writing one.) In Canada and the US you should be able to find this book everywhere, but sadly it's not available in the UK, Australia, or the rest of the Commonwealth. (We're working on it!)
