After Book One there's more familiarity with what's possible and how the characters are likely to behave.
I think our familiarity is used to surprise us by taking ideas further, characters growing in surprising ways and more new ideas not in Book One.(less)

I started reading this book not knowing it was part of series, and there were some stuff that I didn't understand. I'm fairly in the beginning, but I still don't like putting a book down before finishing it. Is there any way I could read this and get what's going on or do I have to read the first book as well?
