The first book in any series is introducing you to everything for the first time. New worlds, new situations, new cultures, customs and characters.
After Book One there's more familiarity with what's possible and how the characters are likely to behave.
I think our familiarity is used to surprise us by taking ideas further, characters growing in surprising ways and more new ideas not in Book One.(less)
