Can anyone else make up their mind about Carver? This story is told in such dry fashion and is obviously a biographical parallel that I have trouble giving him points for creativity. I like his visceral writing and detailed analysis of setting but his tone is so subdued and detached, aspects he's mastered. At times I feel as though he's insincere. Does anyone else feel conflicted about him?

Can somebody explain to me the significance of the two passages in the story that portray Marian "on the floor with blood on her teeth" and asking "why did you hit me"?...I'm I missing something here? She alludes to this silently and then Ralph does? Is it some perverse sexual fantasy on both parts or did it really happen???
