After reading the first 3-4 stories, I must admit Carver knows how to write, but I still can't find the stories themselves trully interesting or involving; any insights anybody?

It's not fancy, shiny, sensual, romantic, elaborate, etc. It's raw, bland, and chewy. Kind of cowboy-esque. The simplicity and ambiguity in a way opens up the options for interpretations. There also might be generational and cultural information/nuances that the reader cannot relate to or pick up on.(less)
