In the German version (that I'm reading) the author differentiates clearly - mostly it's Gilgi, but when her parents address her, he spells it Jilgi (J in German is pronounced like Y, as Andy mentioned). When she is speaking, the author does not use dialect, but proper German. So GHEEL-ghee, unless a character who's speaking in dialect addresses her. (those H's are silent, just to reinforce that the G is hard like Guy, not soft like in Gee).(less)
