Haven't begun this series yet but just ordered it through the library. For those Lymond lovers out there, how do you feel about the Niccolo series? I'm so purely in love with Francis Crawford that I'm afraid to embark on another Dunnett adventure.

Don't be afraid to embark on the Niccolo series! I was afraid to read it too ( I have literally had the books since they first came out - but was afraid of how they would compare against Lymond.) So, it took me until this year to read them. For me personally, I still think the "Lymond Chronicles" are my favorites, but I read them first, and as snarky as Lymond was, I loved him, and his cast of friends and family, etc. I loved the Niccolo series as well, but not as much. But, having said that, please read it - all of it - because it ties into the "Lymond Chronicles" and beyond that, it is a great story as well. Enjoy!

I'm a little nervous about reading this book, just because it's technically adult fiction, so could someone tell me if there any *explicit* er, encounters in this book?

I would not hesitate to recommend this to a young adult reader. The chief difficulty will be the dense plotting and huge cast of characters. Worth the effort, in my opinion.(less)

If you don't have a pretty good background in French and Latin, it might be a good idea to get copies of the DD Companion (vols 1 & 2). If you feel that a quotation needs translation to understand what's going on, it makes it easy to do a quick lookup. Also plenty of information on the historical settings.(less)

I have read both the house of Niccolo and Lymond series. Now i have been browsing the recommended reading feature to find my next book and am disappointed. It simply latches onto the historical nature and setting of the books, I love Dunnett's books because of the spark in the characters and adventure. What do you recommend that is similar?
