We don't know exactly where she was, it's not explained. But we know that Beast and Hayyel had a long conversation, while at the same time she was pondering whether to abandon Jane or keep staying with her, since the angel offered her these two possibilities. How Jane became alpha to Kemnebi is explained in the short story "Blood, Fangs and Going Furry", in the collection "Cat Tales". (less)
